Why smart roller blinds are an excellent investment

The first thing most people think of when they hear the words ‘roller blinds’ is bedrooms that are blacked out for sleeping.

While certainly true, these blinds have so much more to offer – especially when motorised and smart. We look at why they’re a worthwhile investment.

What’s makes a roller blind smart?

The answer is simple. A smart roller blind has a tubular motor that rolls the blind up or down, and is operated via a remote control, a wall-mounted control, or a smartphone. Blinds can be controlled with smart voice assistants too.

Smart roller blinds are also called electric roller blinds or motorised roller blinds. A big advantage is that there is no ball chain. This makes roller blinds significantly safer – particularly when there are small children in the home – as the chance of getting stuck in the ball chain is completely eliminated.

Why invest in smart roller blinds?

The main reason people invest in motorised roller blinds is for the convenience. It’s great to stay in bed in the morning and open your blinds with a remote control! You can take this is a step further and connect the roller blinds to a smart controller – such as the Somfy TaHoma switch – in order for them to rise as the sun does.  You can add support for a voice assistant too, so that with a simple command you can ask Google or Alexa to roll the blinds up as you start the day.

Smart automated sunshades also give you the option of simulating someone being at home – an effective deterrent to unwanted visitors when you’re away. If the sunshades are connected and controlled via the Somfy TaHoma switch, they can be programmed to automatically activate at selected times. Combine this functionality with smart lighting – so that a lamp in the window comes on at the same time as a curtain is drawn, for example – and you give the appearance of a home with occupants.

Smart roller blinds can lower your energy bills

Another important aspect of smart roller blinds is that they can reduce energy costs in the home. When installed correctly and with the right functionality, your roller blinds are activated according to weather conditions – giving you maximum benefit from the heat of the sun.

This is especially useful on clear winter days, when it can be a good idea to take advantage of the sunlight. A temperature or sun sensor placed indoors or outdoors detects an increase in temperature, opening your sunshades so that the heat enters the home. When the sun begins to go down in the afternoon, roller blinds can be lowered over the windows to help retain some of the heat captured during the day.

Smart roller blinds can be used in a similar way during summer. If your home gets a lot of direct sunlight, you may want to block the rays so its cooler when you get home from work. This reduces the need for air conditioning too, which saves overall energy consumption and keeps your electricity bill under control. At times like these, every little bit helps. An extra bonus is that your furniture is protected against the fading caused by exposure to sunlight.

With smart roller blinds, your living environment improves to the benefit of everyone in the home.
