The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in any home. It’s a space of creativity, care and, most importantly, nourishment! Therefore, it’s important to look after the kitchen area, and make sure the atmosphere is just right – and a big part of that is making sure that your kitchen is furnished perfectly. One of the must-have kitchen furnishings is, of course, a window dressing – which is why we’ve put together this handy little guide to help you pick out the perfect kitchen blinds.
Picking out blinds for a kitchen is a tad trickier than picking out blinds for, say, a living room or bedroom. This is because kitchens tend to be a messy environment that can also get damp from time to time. Therefore, any material you use for your kitchen needs to be waterproof and easy to clean. This means fabrics like cotton and real wood are off the table. But fear not, there are still plenty of fabulous blind materials available to you.
Whilst real wood may not be the best for kitchens, you can still achieve a timeless wooden blind aesthetic with the help of fabulous faux wood! Unlike real wood, faux wood isn’t susceptible to damp and rot if exposed to moisture, making it ideal for kitchens. All the glamour of oak or walnut with none of the drawbacks!
If fabric is your blind style of choice, you’ll want a fabric that’s waterproof and wipeable. Enter PVC! This fabric isn’t porous like cotton or some polyesters meaning it won’t retain moisture or odours, saving you from having to deal with things like mould and mildew. Plus, it can be wiped clean with a cloth in a jiffy rather than needing to be endlessly sponged.
The sleek, sharp, and futuristic look of metal blinds makes them tremendously popular in a lot of homes. However, with the steams and spills of a kitchen environment, most metal blinds are at risk of rust. That’s no issue for aluminium though, thanks to aluminium oxide forming on the metal’s surface like special anti-rust armour!
When choosing a style of blind for your kitchen, practicality is key. You want a blind that’s easy to wipe down, and you also want a blind that won’t trap scents.
A PVC or waterproof polyester roller blind is ideal for a kitchen. The blind descends as a single straight piece of fabric without any folds or pleats, meaning it’s easy peasy to quickly wipe away any splatters of sauce or drops of gravy. And when you want your kitchen roller blinds to open? Just pull a cord to have them roll up onto the railing at the top of the window casing.
The straight horizontal slats of Venetian blinds are also super simple to clean, as you can just wipe them down with a damp cloth. And with moisture-friendly material options like aluminium and faux wood, finding kitchen-suitable Venetian blinds is easy as pie.
You can let a filtered amount of light into your kitchen by pulling a cord to open up the slats. Or for unfiltered light, pull a separate cord to lift the blinds all the way up.
Vertical blinds are made up of straight vertical fabric slats which, when made of waterproof materials, are easy to wipe down. These blinds work very similarly to Venetian blinds, with one mechanism opening the slats and another raising the blinds.
Roman blinds are very similar to roller blinds, having the appearance of a straight sheet of fabric when closed. However, Roman blinds also contain slats which create a pleated or folded appearance when the blinds are raised. These slats and folds can make Roman blinds a little fiddlier to clean, meaning they aren’t as popular for kitchens as other blinds. However, Roman blinds are gorgeous, and when made of the right stain and moisture resistant materials, can be a charming addition to your kitchen.
Electric kitchen blinds are a great way to create a more convenient cooking space. Rather than messing around with complicated cords, close your blinds with the flick of a switch, a click on a smartphone app or the push of a remote-control button! Now you can get straight to preparing a tasty meal!
When cooking a complicated recipe or perfecting a delicious dish, the last thing you want is sun in your eyes! However, if you’re cooking in the daytime, you’ll want to use natural light to see what you’re doing rather than wasting electricity.
Well, none of that is a worry. Just lower your blinds to a chosen level to let in enough light to clearly see whilst preventing glare. Now you can read the pages of your cookbook, ensure your vegetables are chopped equally, and check the measurements of your ingredients without any difficulty at all.
Nosy passersby always peeking into your windows? A good set of kitchen blinds will put a stop to that right away!
Kitchens aren’t all about practicality! Sure, the primary purpose of the room is for cooking – but that doesn’t mean the room can’t be aesthetically pleasing too. Give your kitchen some character by choosing a beautiful blind, whether that’s a rustic faux-wood blind for an old-fashioned look, or a brightly patterned roller blind that makes a statement.
